As part of its social responsibility programme Macmillan has adopted Maisantwa Primary School, with particular focus on its pre-primary class. This decision was made after a rigorous selection process that saw about 8 schools in the southern part of Botswana being assessed and Maisantwa Primary School was identified as the most deserving of this assistance.
The three-year project started in 2017 and launched in Sept 2018. Macmillan has pledged to assist Maisantwa Primary school with educational material for three years, with particular attention on the pre-primary class. This has so far included the tiling and painting of the two pre-school classes and provision of classroom and outdoor learning material. The objective of this project is to help the learners and teachers of Maisantwa to maximise their learning potential to develop great minds.
The handing over of the project was done at the school premises on the 17th of September 2018. In attendance were students, teachers and parents of Maisantwa Primary School, Ministry of Education officials, and village elders, and the official handover was done by Macmillan Education Botswana CEO Ms Felicity Leburu-Sianga.
Ms Sianga expressed our excitement in partnering with Maisantwa, an old school that has a rich history and culture. She said that this gives Macmillan an opportunity to be part of the development of the dynamic school culture that will contribute to the nation’s cultural heritage and identity.
Ms Tlaagae, the school head, expressed gratitude for the assistance offered by Macmillan, making mention of the fact that this could not have come at a better time for the school, as they experience challenges in shortage of learning material. Ms Tlaagae said Standard 1 learners who benefited from this project have shown increased confidence in reading and writing and as a school they are excited about the future of their children.
